530 Materia Medica. — Stts Scrofa (Adeps). part ir.

but according to Burzelius, the proportions are, acid 70*45,potass 24'80, and water 4'75.

Medical properties andtiscs. —This salt is purgative, diuretic, and refrigerant. As a purgative it is frequently employed, onaccount of its taste being less unpleasant than the generality ofsaline cathartics; but it is apt to excite too much absorptionwhen long used, producing emaciation, and also disorderingthe digestive organs. This property, however, of exciting theaction of the absorbents, is taken advantage of with great effectin the cure of dropsy, particularly ascites ; in which the super-tartrate of potass has been found extremely efficacious. It ge-nerally occasions a considerable discharge of serous fluid intothe bowels, which is thrown off in the form of watery stools, atthe same time^that the discharge by urine is much augmented. The water in the cavity of the abdomen is thus rapidly carriedoff: and the chances of a return of the disease are supposedto be fewer than when other diuretics are employed. We areof opinion, however, that in cases complicated witb hepatic ob-structions the effects of this remedy are very uncertain. It maybe advantageously united with squill; and, owing to the ex-haustion it occasions, its use should be followed by preparationsof iron, and other tonics. As a refrigerant, super-tartrate ofpotass dissolved in water, and the solution sweetened with su-gar is a pleasant beverage in febrile diseases, when its purga-tive quality is not likely to prove injurious. As a purgativeand hydragogue the dose is from giv to gvj, in the form of elec-tuary ; and this dose for the latter purpose must be repeateduntil the kidneys are affected ; diluting freely during its use.
