TINCTU'RA JAL'AP^. Lond.' Tincture of Jalap.

" Take of jalap-root, powdered, eight ounces; proof spirit,txeo pints. Digest for fourteen days, then filter."

Dublin.

"Take of jalap-root in coarse powder, Jive ounces; proofspirit, two pints. Digest for seven days, then filter."

Tinctura Convolvuli Jalaps. Edin. Tincture of Jalap.

" Take of jalap-root in powder, three ounces; proof spirit,' Jift een ounces. Digest for seven days, and filter through paper."

Both water and alcohol separately extract part of the activeprinciples of jalap, and proof spirit the whole of them; thecombination of the gum, extractive, and resin of the root beingrequisite for the production of its full cathartic effect. The.great difference in point of strength of these tinctures is muchto be regretted.

TINCTU'RA KI'NO. Lond. Tincture of Kino.*

" Take of kino in powder, three ounces; proof spirit, twopints. Macerate for fourteen days, and strain."Edinburgh. lyublin.

" Take of kino, two ounces; (three ounces, Dub.) proof spirit,a pint and a half. Digest for seven days, and filter throughpaper."

The matter in solution in this tincture is chiefly tannin. Itis administered in chronic diarrhoea, the latter stage of dysen-itery, fluor albus, and in all cases in which astringents are indi-cated ; but it is less certain in its operation than the tinctureof catechu. The dose is from f5J. to fjij.

TINCTU'RA LYTTiE. Lond. Tincture of blisteringTly?

" Take of blistering flies bruised, three drachms; proofspirit, two pints. Macerate for fourteen days, and filter."

Tinctura Cantharides vescicatori;e. Edin. Tincture ofBlistering Fly.

" Take of blistering flies bruised, a drachm ; proof spirit, apound. Digest for seven days, and filter through paper."

Tinctura Cantharidis. Dub. Tincture of Blistering Fly.

" Take of blistering flies in powder, two drachms; cochinealin powder, half a drachm; proof spirit, a pound and a half.Digest for seven days, then strain."

Proof spirit extracts the active matter of the flies, and is amore convenient form for exhibiting it internally than in sub-stance.

This tincture is useful in gleets, fluor albus, incontinence of
