This is an elegant stomachic bitter and cordial; but in dys-pepsia, in which it is more particularly indicated, the infusionis preferable.

TINCTURA GUAI'ACI. Lond. Dub. Tincture ofGuaiac. '

" Take of guaiac powdered, half apound [four ounces, Dub.);proof spirit, two pints. Macerate for fourteen days, (sevendays, Dub.) and filter."

Tinctura Guaiaci officinalis. Edin. Tincture of Guaiac.

" Take of guaiac, in powder, six ounces; alcohol, twopounds and a half. Digest for seven days, and filter throughpaper."

The difference in the proportion of the guaiac in these for-mulas is much to be regretted. It is separated from the alco-hol by the addition of water"; and therefore when this tinctureis to be given in the form of draught, it must be triturated withyolk of egg, or with mucilage, to enable it to combine with wa-ter. The dose is from fy. to fjiij. in any convenient vehicle.

TINCTU'RA GUAI'ACI AMMONIATA.* Lond. Dub.Edin. Ammoniated Tincture of ' Guaiacum.

" Take of guaiac, in powder, four ounces; aromatic spiritof ammonia, one pint and a half. Macerate for fourteen days,(seven days, Edin. Dub.) and filter."

As the ammonia coincides with the operation of guaiac morethan spirit, this tincture is more efficacious as a stimulatingsudorific than the former preparation. Water decomposes it;separating the guaiac in dark curdy flakes. The dose is fromf5j. to fjij. triturated with any mucous or viscid matter.

TINCTU'RA HELEB'ORI M'GRI. 3 Lond. Tinctureof black Hellebore.

" Take of the root of black hellebore sliced, four ounces ;proof spirit, two pints. Macerate for fourteen days, andfilter."

Edinburgh. Dublin.

" Take of black hellebore-root bruised, (powdered, Dub.)two ounces; cochineal in powder, fij'teengrains; (twoscruples,Dub.); proof spirit, ffteen ounces, (two pints, Dub.) Digestfor seven days, then filter through paper."
