Tinctures.

PART III.

Haifa fluid ounce of this tincture contains nearly a grain ofopium. It has been long known under the titles ParegoricElixir and Asthmatic Elixir,- and is an useful anodyne in chro-nic asthma, hooping-cough, and catarrh after the inflammatorysymptoms have abated; in which it contributes to allay thetickling which induces the frequent cough. The dose is fromftj. to t'siij. occasionally in the above cases, using after it theinhaler; and f^iij- in cases where quiet, rather than sleep, isrequired.

TINCTURA CAPSICI. Lond. Tincture of Capsicum.

" Take of capsicum berries, an ounce; proof spirit, twopints. Macerate for fourteen clays, and filter."

This is a convenient form for exhibiting capsicum in tym-panitis, cynanche maligna, the low stage of typhus, and in si-milar cases. The dose is from fsfs. to fjj.; and a mixture off5vj. with half a pint of water will answer all the purposes ofthe capsicum gargle.

TINCTURA CARDAMOMI. Lond. Dub. Tincture ofCardamoms.

" Take of cardamom seeds husked and bruised, three ounces;proof spirit, two pints. Macerate for fourteen days, (sevendays, Dub.) and filter."

Tinctura Amomi repentis. Edin. Tincture of Cardamoms.

" Take of lesser cardamom seeds bruised, four ounces; proofspirit, two pounds and a half. Digest for seven days, and fil-ter through paper."

TINCTURA CARDAMOMI COMPOSITA. Lond.Dub. Compound Tincture of Cardamoms.

" Take of cardamom seeds, (husked, Dub.) carraway seeds,cochineal, of each, in powder, two drachms; cinnamon barkbruised, half an ounce ; raisins stoned, four ounces; proof spi-rit, two pints. Macerate for fourteen days, and filter."

The raisins are properly omitted in the Dublin formula.Both the simple and the compound tinctures of cardamomsare agreeable cordials, and form elegant adjuncts to stomachicinfusions.

TINCTURA CASCARILLiE. 1 Lond. Dub. Tincture ofCascarilla.

" Take of cascarilla bark powdered, four ounces ; proof spi-rit, two pints. Macerate for fourteen days, (seven days, Dub.)and filter."

Tinctura Crotonis Eleutheri;e. Edin. Tincture ofCrotoiiEleutheria, or Cascarilla.
