This is one of the most beautiful of our indigenous plants.It is a perennial, not uncommon in watery situations, in ablack boggy soil, flowering in June and July. The root islong, round, fibrous, and of a black colour; the stems arespreading, branched, and clothed with sheathing footstalks,each of which supports a ternate leaf, formed of three obovatesmooth, bluntly toothed leaflets, of a beautiful green on theupper surface, and pale beneath: the flower stalk, whichsprings from within the sheath of a leaf, is longer than theleaves, erect, smooth, round, bearing a thyrsus of about tenflowers, accompanied by small ovate entire bractes: the calyxis obtusely five-toothed; the corolla a funnel-shaped petal,cleft into five deep segments, which are white, tipped withrose colour, and closed within with long fleshy shaggy fibres ontheir upper side: the anthers are sagittate, and of a red colour:the germen round: and the stigma cloven and notched, on aslender style twice the length of the stamens.
Qualities. — The leaves of buckbean have a faint disagree-able odour, and an intensely bitter nauseous taste, which isextracted by infusion with water.
Medical properties and mes. — Buckbean is tonic, diuretic,und purgative. It has been used with seeming benefit in re-mittent and intermittent fevers, rheumatism, arthritic affec-tions, and in cachectic and cutaneous diseases. In large dosesit is apt to excite vomiting. The dose of the dried leaves pow-dered, is from 3j to 5j; or of an infusion made with %{& of thedried leaves, and boiling water Ofs, from f^j to fjyfs may betaken three or four times a day. It is adviseable to unitesome aromatic with either of these forms.
