In many instances these proportions are only to be consideredas approximations to the truth, as they are calculated from thequantities of the ingredients taken to form the preparation, notfrom the quantities which exist in it after it is formed The ni-trate of mercury, for example, in the different ointments intowhich it enters, is estimated as equal to the whole quantity ofmercury and nitrous acid employed to form it, although, fromthe very nature of the preparation, it cannot be so much. In thesolutions of opium, the opium is estimated as equal to the wholequantity employed, although not above two-thirds of it be dis-solved. And, lastly, no allowance is made for the loss by evapo-ration.
