lating, carminative, diaphoretic, and diuretic properties.They are most commonly used in the form of infusion, as adiuretic drink in dropsy. The essential oil may be separatedby distillation. It possesses the same properties in a higherdegree, and imparts them to ardent spirits. The peculiarflavour, and well-known diuretic effects of Hollands, are ow-ing to the oil of juniper. The decoction and extract arevery inert preparations of the class of bitters.

Every part of the plant contains the same essential oil;therefore an infusion of the tops is likewise diuretic. Thewood, also, was formerly officinal. In warm countries a re-sin exudes from the juniper-tree. It is called sandarac, andis often mixed with mastich. It is not a pure resin, for, ac-cording to Mr Giese, about one-fifth of it is not soluble in wa-ter, or in alcohol, but in ether, resembling in these respectscopal.

This is an evergreen shrub, a native of Siberia and Tarta-ry, but not unfrequent in our gardens. The leaves have -abitter, acrid, biting taste, and a strong disagreeable smell :distilled with water, they yield an essential oil in considerablequantity.

Medical use. —Savine is a warm stimulating medicine, ca-pable of producing diaphoresis, and increasing all the secre-. tions, but apt to excite haemorrhagy, especially from theuterus. It is also recommended as an anthelmintic, and issaid to be very efficient in the cure of gout.

Internally, a conserve of the fresh leaves is exhibited indoses of from half a drachm to a drachm.

Externally, the leaves are applied in the form of powder orinfusion to warts, carious bones, and old ulcers, and in casesof gangrene, psora, and tinea; an excellent issue ointment isalso prepared with the powder. The essential oil is a veryactive remedy.
