Under the Divifion ofJulep likewife, we fhall have oc-cafion to mention all thofe extem-poraneous Formula, called Spirits orDrops, that are met with in thecommon Practice.

SECT. III.

Of Juleps, 'Draughts, and Mixtures.

TH E firft of thefe Forms isfo much alter'd in the pre-fent Practice, that the lateft Difpen-fatory Writers cannot be of any fer-vice to us herein. Under this Titleus'd to be included a great dealmade by Infufion,and receiv'd fromthe exprefled Juices of Herbs, Fruits,C?c. and Dr. Fuller, the lateft ofall, has fcarce a Julep in his wholeBook, which would not be thoughta very odd Prefcription now in anyapothecary's Shop ; for he oftenadds Powders and Chymical Oils,which deform this kind of Medi-cine ; and are much more conve-niently exhibited in Boles, or Pow-ders, or Electuaries. The prefentPractice is not extraordinary onlyin the Neatnefs and Elegance of theirextemporaneous Medicines,by whichit has rejected out of Juleps all buttranfparent Liquors, unlefs in Pearl-Juleps ; but alfo regards them onlyas Diluters, and therefore orderswhat the main Dépendance is upon,in fome other Form. And even the

quantities herein are fo exactly keptup to, from J viii. to about | x.for the largeft Juleps, that the Shopsare only furnifh'd with Phials ofthofe Sizes to 'contain them. Thefome Alteration likewife is made inDraughts, they being now little elfethan a lefs Proportion of the famethings as are order'd in Juleps, forone Dofe to wafti down or dilutea Bole, or a Medicine in a more folidForm. In no Intention thereforeare they trufted to, unlefs as Nar-cotics anâCathartics ; many of thofemedicines being convenientlyenoughexhibited in a Draught for oneDofe : And a Potion feems to dif-fer from this no other wife, than asit is more a medicinal Term, andtherefore generally applied to Ca-thartics.
