PART IV.

Of Extemporaneous Compofitions.

UNDER this Divifion wefhall collect all that partof Medicine, which is tobe met with in the extemporane-ous Prefcriptions of Phyficians, anddiftribute them as conveniently aspoiîîblc under Heads fuited to theirIntentions in Cure ; whereby theyoung Prefcriber may have at oneView all that under any particularForm is ufually directed, and keptin readinefs in the Shops, for anyIntention whatfoever. By whichmeans much of the trouble willbe faved, that a great many Wri-tings of this kind make necefla-ry, of turning from an Index ofDifeafcs to a new place for everyRecipe fuited thereunto : for as inour Second Part a Prefcriber maymeet with all the Simples of thefame Intention together, fo in thislie will find all of the fame Formdiftributed under like Heads. Thusin Juleps, for inftance, accordingto the Method of the Second Part,all fitted for the Intention of a Ce-phalic, Carminative, Hyfieric, andfo on, will be found together un-der fuch refpective Divisions. Sothat under each Form all regardpoiîïble is had to p'.ice every In-dividual in fuch a manner, that by

turning to that Divifion, underthe Intention in view, all of thatForm fuited thereunto will befound together : but that fome-what under every Form would bemet with for every Intention, isnot to be expected ; becaufe theNature of the Simples proper forthofe Intentions, may not fuitevery one equally, or are per-haps for fome very improper.Thus a Cephalic is not to be look'dfor amongft Linftus's ; becaufe thevery Form which paffes in extem-poraneous Practice under that Ap-pellation, is intirely unfit for theCompofition of any thing fubtileand volatile. And thus no onewill expect a Balfamic amongitSpirits, becaufe thofe Properties ina medicinal Simple which entitle itto that rank are not reducible un-der fuch a Form. But as this mat-ter is of the greateft moment to aPrefcriber, and has not yet in thelead been hinted at in any Workof this kind, we fhall here give fucha fhort Scheme of the feveral In-tentions of Cure as the Simples Wereranged under, in the Second Part,with the Forms molt convenientfor thofe Intentions,
