It feems, if any regard was hadin its Contrivance to Example, tohave chiefly followed the Unguen-tum Aureum of Mefue, juft beforetaken notice of ; but that is a muchneater Compofition than this, thobpth pretty nearly agree in Inten-tion. Nicolaus hath indeed a Pre-fcription under the Title of Unguen-tum Bafilicon Citrinum, which theAuguflan Difpenfatory hath tranf-crib'd ; but that is a very injudici-ous Medley of Ingredients of diffe-rent Virtues, notwithstanding Zwel-fer takes a mighty deal of Pains inhis Animadverilons to direct themanner of compounding it. All theLondon Difpenfatoues before thelait have likewife retained fromMefue an Unguentum B.ifilicon Ma-ins, but it is a moft perplexed Mix-ture and never ufed, and thereforevery juftly omitted here.

This likewife was never beforein any officinal Difpenfatory, andhath the Credit of the fame Con-triver as the foregoing ; tho verymuch like unto this hath been longmade in the Shops a Succedaneumto the Unguentum F.mulatum cumMercurio, which feems to have ow-ed its Invention rather to Cheap-nefs and Difpatch, the infeparableMotive to a wholefale Medicine-maker, than any laudable Defignor Improvement. The AuguflanDifpenfatory indeed gives an Un-guentum Mercuriale, which is vaft-

ly differing from this, and croudedwith a ftrange Deformity of Ingre-dients ; but Zwelfer in his Animad-verfions thereupon, gives one muchmore fímple, and that differs notgreatly from this, but in the ad-dition of Oils from Guaiacum andStorax. In his Notes upon that,he fays, that the bed way of mixingMercury with unguents, is to dif-iblve in it Aqua Fortis ; and afterthat DifTolmion is well mixed withLard, to evaporate the Ac¡ua Fortisover a Fire, in a Glafs VefTel. ButI conjecture that the Mercury byfuch Management would alfo ex-hale, or run again into its naturalGlobules ; or, that a great deal ofit wou'd, however, be fo loft.

This is taken by the AuguflanDifpenfatory, as weil as that of ourCollege from Foeftus, Sect. 11. whichis there directed amongft fome otherthings againft Burns. Zwelfer foundfault with fo many Ablutions ofthe Lime, becaufe he fays it reduces¡t to a mere dead Earth. This ishowever feldom called for in Pre-fcriptions, and I believe hardlyever na
