636. Arsenicum, Arfenuk.This is a ponderous Mineral, con-fiding of a Sulphur loaded withcorrofive Salts. There are threeforts ; the Yelloro, cali'd Orpiment,much known amongft the Pain-ters; Red, cali'd Sandarach, andthe White, which is mod proper-ly cali'd Arfenhk. It is made ofthe Red by mixing equal parts ofSandarach and common Salt, andfubliming them together.

We meet with many Preparationsof this in Chymical Writers: butthey all turn upon this, by frequentSublimations and Ablations lb far toblunt the Salts, as to change themfrom z-Poifon into a Medicine ofSafety, after the manner oí WhiteSublimate. But the advantage here-by procur'd does not fèem to beworth tliepains.becaufewe are bet-ter and more eafily furnifh'd fromthe Mercurial Preparations for thefame Intentions as thefe are pre-tended for. And as they are like-wife neither in the Shops, nor evertaken notice of in Prefcription, theyare not worth room here.

Su c c 1 v v M, Amber.This is iùppos'd to be a bituminousJuice or Reiinof the Earth, foft andvifcous; or at firft in a kind of Tluor,becaufe there are often found in itStraws, Flies, &c It has manyNames, as Carabe, and Glejfum,befides what it ftands here under.It is found in the terfian Gttlph, andthe Italian Shore; alio in the Cur-rents near the Saltic Sea, and thaDutchy of Prußa. It is of differentColours, White, Yellow and Black jbut tholè who work it into Beads,and other things, make many moreSorts. The White is mod efteem'dfor medicinal Ufe, and being beft di-gefted.ofthemoft odoriferous Smell,and containing the greateft quantityof Volatile Salt. The Yellow isnext in Goodnefs, and moft valuedby the Amber- Workers,by reaibn ofits Tranfparency. The Black is leaftin efteem of all. Amber by Agita-tion lends forth an agreeable Smell ¡and being ground into fine Pouder,is given in Gonorrhsa's, and in fuchCales by fome of great account ; asalfo in fpitting of Blood, the BloodyFlux, and an immoderate Flux ofthe H&morrhñdts, Menfes, éfc. allôto ftop the Violence of Catarrhs,the Fume of it burnt upon Coals,being rcceiv'd by the Nofe.

It is found in pieces of differentfiz.es, from the bignels of a greatPin's Head, to tholè of five, fix orfeven Inches Diameter. The greaterpieces ara wrought into Cabinets,Cups, and feveral Figures, and arevalued according to their Bignelsand Tranfparency.
