This is prefcribed againil Defor-mities of the Skin, and often forthe Itch ; but it is an uncertain Re-medy, and not to be us'd withoutCaution.

634. Sal Ammoniacum,Sal Armoniac. This is broughtfrom Alexandria in Egypt, Venice,Antwerp, Sec. It is either naturalor artificial: The natural is foundin very hot Countries, where theEarth hasimbib'd the Urineof Ani-mals; but of this little or nonecomes to us.

Sal Ammoniacum Faftitium, Facti-tious Sal Armoniac.* Take ot Urine ft x. of Sea-

* Salt ft ii. and Wood-Soot it i. boil' thefe together into a Mafs, then' put them into a Subliming Pot

* with a proper Head, and there

* will rife up what forms thofe

* Cakes. This is met with in the« Shops.'

The marine Salt fo fixes what isvolatile in the Urine and Soot, thatthis Mafs difcovers nothing to theSmell, but talles íbmewhat pun-gent. This is purify'd by diffol-ving it in hot Water, which is tobe filter'd and evaporated to a Pel-licle upon the Surface: and it willihoot in a cold place and a properVeflel into a fine white Salt, whichoperates both by Sweat and Urine,and is a good Aperient in all kindsof Obilru£tions. Its Dofe is fromxx gr. to 3 ifs.

Sal Ammoniacum Sublimatnm,S«i-limation of Sal Armoniac.' Put any quantity of Sal Armo-' niac in grofs Pouder into a Re-* tort, or Matrafs with its Head;' place it in a Sand-Furnace, fit a' Receiver to it, and give a gradualI Fire to the third degree, in which

' it mull be kept till all is fublimed,' which may be perceived by the' Sublimate's riling clear above the« Sand.'

This has the like Virtues as thepurify'd, and may be given in thefame Dofe.

Sal Ammoniacum Volatile, VolatileSal Armoniac.

« Take Sal Armoniac, and Salt' of Tartar, each equal quantities,' and fublime, as in the foregoing,' but in a Veflël that is not above' one third or a quarter full, elle the« Glafs will be apt to buril.'

Some inilead of Salt of Tartarput Lime, and others Chalk or com-mon Whiting. If the Sal Armo-niac be good, it will fublime thisway above twelve Ounces, whichwill be extremely 'volatile, and isgood for Pocket Smelling-Bottles.For which purpofes ibme put Spicesinto the Retort, which makes itmore grateful. It is prefcrib'd inmalignant Fevers as a Sudorific, inthe form of a Bole, with otherconvenient Ingredients: For it isnot fit for Pouders, its Volatilityibon willing it : In Pills it -will fer-ment, and it does & in Boles; butthere it does not deilroy the Form,and Convenient - / of taking. TheDofe is from gr. v. to x.

Flores Salis Ammoniaci, Flo-seen ofSal Armoniac.' Pouder and mix together equal' Parts of Sal Armoniac in Pouder,' and Sea-Salt .decrepitated: Put' this Mixture into an earthen Cu-c curbit, and having placed it in' Sand, fit to it a blind Head. The' Fire mull be gentle at firil, and •' increas'd by little and little, fo' long as the Sal Armoniac on be' perceiv'd to rile like Meal, and' flick to the Head. Then let the' Veffel
