Itis acid and grateful to the Stomach,quenches Thirfi, allays the Heat ofCholer; and, as Schroder, withmany others, iàys, rciifls Putrefac-tion, and is of great ufe in Pefti-lential Fevers, But a better Theory,and Experience, now renouncesluch Practice, and convinces usthat fuch things by retarding andchilling the Juices too much, givethem an opportunity of ferment-ing, and running into Corruptionand Putréfaction. It is a gratefuland falutary Ingredient in a SummerSollet, if eat in moderation : Butit is little taken notice of in medi-cinal Prefcription.

Thishas got a Name for a Cooler, andparticularly of the genital Parts, foas to have been preicrib'd to a'laythofe inordinate Emotions and De-fires, which arife from SeminalTurgefcency: for which Intentionsmany Authors have Comportions,*vherein this is a principal Ingre-dient, and from whence They taketheir Names. But they are notnow in any efteem, or fcarce evermade or us'd in the Shops.

499. A L s 1 N E s, called alfoMorsus Gallina, ChickweeJor Hen-Hit. There are many fortsof it defcribed by Botanic Writers ;but the Alfine Media, the middlekind, of C. Bauh'me, is the Chick-weed of the Shops. It grows inGardens, and almoft all manured

Grounds. It comes out in theWinter, and flowers until Midfum-mer. The whole is in Uiè, and isaccounted a Cooler, rruch of thefame Virtues as Bellitory of theWall ; but it is now rarely uled inMedicine.

5-00. Anchusí, Alkanet.Some make this a Species of theBuglofs, and afcribe to it the fameVirtues, particularly of its beingmoderately cooling. But it is ufedonly in officinal Compositions, andin them but very feldom .

This Plant has generallypafs'd for a Cooler ; but Hehr oder,and after him our own Mr. Bay,from its Bitternefs, pronounce itrather on the contrary fide, andwill have it to be a good Betergent iand upon that foot, of fervice in allObftruilions of theVifcera, and par-ticularly of the Liver, which makesit in their account an exccllcnt-He^i-tic : and indeed in this view is itregarded in tholè Shop-Compofi-tionswheieit isconcein'd. Almoftall Authors extolling it in Cafes pro-ceeding from a Redundance of Cho-ler, may have occafion'd it to paisfor a Refrigerante. Etmuller greatlycommends the Syrupus de dehor eocum Rhabarbaro, which the Collegeyet retain in their Difpsnfatory, forChildren. Panarolus much com-mends this Herb in all Intempera-tures of the Vifcera ; and Spigeliusmentions it as an Antiar thritic. Inextemporaneous Prefcription we fel-dom meet with it, unlefs in a fewmedicated Ales.
