Lavendulje, oiLavender.The Plant which produceth thefcwas antiently moil known by theName of Spica, divided into Maleand Female ; the former of whichis not ufed, the latter is the Laven-der of the Shops, and diftinguiihedby Co/par Bauhine, by the Nameof Lavendula Angußifolia, the nar-row-leav'd Lavender ; it is alio thefame as the Pfeudonardus Peminaof Mathiolus. The Flowers blowin June and July, and are muchof the Nature of the Roiè-maryFlowers, only more fweet, or ap-proaching ro a Perfume. Thereare no Diic-aies of the Head, inwhich they are not employ'd un-der ibme Form or other ; they arealio very grateful and cordial to theStomach. In all paralytic Affecti-ons they are reckon'd to give placeto nothing, and in lofs of Speechtl\ey do wonders. Rulandus men-tions one he cured in that Cafe, bydrink .ng a Spoonful at a time ofan Intiiilon of them in Spirit ofWine. How-ever, they juftly ftand in the firitRank of Cephalics, if thus manag'd,otherwife they are good for little ;for altho* they are commonly madethe Bafis of a Cephalic Snuff, theyare of no very great Efficacy there-in : fo that what Feats fuch Snuffsdo, are uiually more owing to theother Ingredients.

11. Pjeoni .iE, of Pioney. ThisPlant is divided into Male and Fe-male ; the former of which is pre-ferred in Medicine ; they are diftin-guifhable both in the Root andLeaves ; the Male is defcribed byCafpar Bauhi.s, folio nigricantefphndido, with a ihining blackifhLeaf, from which theFemalediffersin being lighter colour'd. TheRoot of the Male kind is likewifemore bulbous, fhorter and branch-ed ; whereas the other runs out intofew, longer and thinner Shoots.The Flowers blow in May andJune. They are much in efteemfor ConvuLions in Children, andaccounted good in all nervousDiftempers. The fimple Syrup ofthe Shops is the moil they are em-ploy'd in.
