proper warm bath may be supplied by some of the portable baths,filled with warm water. The most convenient* these contri-vances, which are to be had at the tin-shops, is commonly calledthe slipper bath, from its resembling a slipper in form. A cask, ora common tub, may be used for the purpose upon an emergency,though not so commodious.

When hepatitis degenerates into a chronic state, the commonmode of cure is by mercury, which is the most effectual practice.It should be given in small doses and slowly, so as just to keep upa brassy taste in the mouth for a considerable time, as it promotesthe secretion of bile, and excites the extreme vessels on the sur-face ; and to increase the latter effect, it has been found useful tocombine it with small proportions of antimonial powder, as well asopium. To keep up the regular peristaltic motion, which is thenext salutary process, and excite tJie mouths of the excretory ductsof the liver, one or two of the pills prescribed below may be takenoccasionally at bed time.*

General bleeding is never necessary in chronic inflammation ofthe liver; but in a few instances topical bleeding by means ofleeches or scarifications (cupping) may be serviceable. When thereis much local uneasiness, blisters may be advantageously applied.Inflammations of the stomach and bowels are usually attendedwith obstinate costiveness, for the removal of which no small skilland perseverance are often necessary. Sometimes a very mildmedicine will operate, where a powerful one has had no effect, Ihave known a few spoonsful of castor oil procure a stool, after thefailure of strong drastic purges. The means, therefore, should bevaried, not hastily discontinued. Where one thing does not suc-ceed, auother may be happily employed; and instances are notwanting of the efficacy even of external applications, when the bestinternal remedies have proved unsuccessful.

CHOLERA MORBUS, AND OTHER EXCESSIVE DIS-CHARGES FROM THE STOMACH AND BOWELS.

The cholera morbus is a violent purging and vomiting of hiliousmatter, attended with gripes, sickness, and a constant desire to goto stool. It comes on suddenly, and is most common in autumn.There is hardly any disease that kills more quickly than this, whenproper means are not used in due time for removing it. 9

In warm climates it is met with at all seasons of the year, andits occurrences are very frequent ; but in England and other coldclimates, it is apt to prevail most during the autumnal months,when there is excessive heat, or sudden transitions from heat tocold ; and the violence of the disease has usually been observed to

1 arm.Calomel, 1 scr.

Emetic Tvtar, 4 grs

Oil of Caraway, 5 drps.

Simple Syrup, enough.Make 30 pills ; to be taken as directedabove.
