SCILLA EXSICCATIO.

The Drying of Squill.

Cut the Squill tranfverfely, after the outerildn has been taken off, into thin. flices, anddry it with agentle heat,

A proof of the Squill being properly dried is itsretaining, though friable, its original bitternefs andacrimony.

By drying, Lewis fays, the root lofes four-fifthsof its original weight ; and that the parts which ex-.hale are merely watery: hence four grains of thedry root are nearly equivalent to a fcruple of thefrefh.

It is given as an expeftorant and diuretic, to a-dults, in dofes of a few grains: in fomewhat largerones it proves emeric.
