The wood of this tree, which grows fpontaneoufly in theterritory of Surinam, in South America, and in the ifland"of St. Croix, was rftade known in Sweden, Bergius teils us,by Rolander; who, having learnt its virtues from a negro,named ShiaJJi, (by others Cdiffi,) brought a fpeeimen of iton his return from Surinam, in 1756 ;—- but Firmin fays the'Bols de Coijft was known as a medicine at Surinam long be-fore the Negro Coljjl; — and Malier teils us his fon-in-lawBraun, when ill with an epidemic fever in 1742, tookitasa remedy in common ufe.
