It is extolied by the Brafilians and Portuguefe in fuppref-fions of urjne, and in nephritic and calculous complaints.Hclvetius afErms that ftones the bignefs of an olive havecome away by its ufe, and prevented the neceflity of lithoto-my, but that it has not always fliev/n the fame efficacy; (Surles Malad.) that, in nephritic pains and fupprefiions of urine,he has often given it wjrh fuccefs ; — that he has fometimesfeen the patient freed from pain almoft in an inflant, a veryplentiful difcharge of urine fucceeding ;—that, in ulcers ofthe kidneys and bladder, where the urine was mucous andpuruknt, and could fcarcely be voided, or not without greatVtneafinefs, the fymptoms v/ere foon relieved by Pareira, andthe ulcer at length healed by joining to it fome balfam of Co-paiva. (TraSi. de Mai. Med. tom. 2.) It was found to be apowerful expe&orant in an humoral afthma, and in an ifteriecholic, from concretcd bile, the pain was foon relieved, andall the fymptoms removed ; but, in an iöerus, when theliverwas fwelled, härd, and ichirrhous, it did no good.
