The herb has a very bitter naufeous tafle,without fmell, (Berg.) andits expreffed juiceislefs bitter thaaitsrefiduum. (Boulduc Je. Sc. 1705. ) —Water extracts beftits virtues, (Margraaf Ac Berl. 1747J which are ftrong-ly purgative ; nordoes drying much leiten them. Bergius.
Hedge-byjfop is anthelminthic, deobftruent, diuretic, andefpeciaily purgative ; vomiting fome, and now and then fa-livating. In the leucophlegmatia, dropfy, mania, &c. it isorten more efficacious than the common remedies. (Spaltnu-ßy Dijf.) The herb is given in powder, infufion, and ex-tract. An infufion of 5Ü or jfs in powder, is ftronglypurgative. (Vogel.) The extracT: is given in fmall dofes atfirfr, and gradually augmented from 1 grain to jfs in a day.(Spalovjfiy.) Bergius foys he often gave fuccefsfully 3fs ofthe leaves with 5 gr. of gentian, thrice a day, in the relapfesof bilious fevers and autumnal quartans.
The powdered root, which is intenfely bitter and fubaftria-gent, (Boulduc^) is rnoft proper for the dropfy, mania, nie-lancholy, and worms,—its dofe from 3fs to jfe, as it ac~tspowerfully. The infufion, orextrafr, of the leaves is moftfuitabh tothofe fer whom great andfuddenevacuations are notnecefiary. (Spqkwßy.) Stdrck directs, in dropfy, (it fhouluieem as a diuretic,) fmall dofes of an infufion of 5Ü of theroot in fö] of wine feveral times a day,—or 5fs, in powder,as a purgative dofe for feveral days fucceffively ; and, if toogreat debility or anxiety is produced by it, at longer intervals.(Prac. med. praß, tom 2, p. 39.)
