2 Weights and Measures.

We employ the pound of the goldfmiths jwhich, however, we do not divide as they do,but in this manner :

The meafures likewife for liquids in thiscountry are of different forts : with one fortbeer being maafured, with the other wine. Weemploy the latter; ufing that meafure for apint which is called a loine-pwt.

This pint we divide thus :The pint 1 . f fixteen ounces.

only 437f grains : that is, lere by 42f grains ; fo that tenounces Troy are almoli: equal to eleven Avoirdupois. Now,as the compofitions of the Difpenfatory, and the ex-temporaneous prefcriptibns of phyficians, are adapted to theTroy-weight, it is evident, that, if the ounce and half-ounceAvoirdupois are cmployed with the Troy dram and its fubdi-vifions, the ingrcdients muil be taken in improper propor-tions. It is to he lamented that the Avoirdupois weights arenotbanifhed entirelyfrom the fhops of apothecaries.
