Let it he known to the chiefs and principal men of theisland of Malta, heads of the Counsel, and the leadingpersons, French or Venetians, and those other magnatesof the religion of the Messiah who happen to he inthat island, that we have been expressly sent by theGreat Lord and Patron of the universe and refuge of theworld, that you may consign to us and transmit to us, allthe slaves, and particularly those of St. John, who findthemselves exposed to their had and unholy government,in order that they he presented before his august andeminent Throne. And since this is his will and command,we have come well armed, and with the greatest valour in-form you by this letter of our arrival to receive all suchslaves; and in case you make any difficulty in consigningsaid slaves, you shall know and repent. The answer to thisletter you shall send to Tunis.
