Pantaleone, generally reputed a good Swiss Protes-tant, says very well, that the Order is not to de-fend any division of Christianity, hut the whole of it,from the Barbarians—quo Christiani pacifice vivere acDei gloriam in parte Europac, immo terrarum Angolo,celebrare ad seculi consummationem intrepide queant,1580, pag. 387.

It is the same writer who repeats Solyman’s expressionsto his Yizier just on L’Isle Adam’s departure from Rhodes—words not to he found in Bosio or any other of the His-torians : “ Equidem haud possum non dolere, qui infeli-

cem hunc Senem propriis larihus pulsum, mosstum huncahire videam” 200. (He adds in another page 183) : c Nodescription of Protestants will ever deny that the Knightsof St. John of Jerusalem merit high favour.’ Indeed, hisvery title-page is an eulogium of them, and it is the moregratuitous and impartial that he never belonged to theOrder in any way.
