Grand Master of the Sacred House of the Hospitalof St. John, and the Hospitallers. 1 On the 13th ofOctober, certain persons borrow a thousand Saracenbezants from Montacute, Grand Master of theHospitallers, one of the witnesses being a Garneriuswith the adjunct of Alemannus , the German, todistinguish him from others of the same name,English or of whatever country; for thoughlanguages were a posterior creation far, yet not soseveral leading offices being assigned to particularlands. Prior of England was always an Englishmanby a custom dating from the very beginning of theorder, 2 and on the 8th of the calends ofAugust in 1216 the brief of Pope HonoriusIII., 3 recommends the Prince of Antioch to the Hos-pitallers; and on the 9th of the same month andyear, comes a letter from the said Pope to the GrandMaster of the Hospitallers, bidding him to go toCyprus to confer with the King of Hungary andDuke of Austria, as to the affairs of Palestine, 4 andin January, 1217, John of Brienne, King ofJerusalem, speaks of Gawen de MontacuteGrand Master of the Hospitallers. 5 Therefore, in
