these might perhaps have been goaded on to seewith some displeasure their own children put overtheir heads; but indeed it was not so, and otherchroniclers of that time say the direct contrary.The fact is, that neither orders had time for suchsquabbles; and it was those who hated both whotried to play them off against each other, and alas!had too quickly their intent regarding one. Butall that is childish now.

Great warriors were lost in those holy wars, andMahometanism survived. Frederick I. was heldquite as valiant and as able a soldier as Alexanderthe Great; and they appeared on nearly the samescene. One conquered the Sultan, the other Darius;why then so different a result? Frederick had anestablished religion against him, Alexander not;but an established religion is what is hardest tovanquish. 1

In 1193, another Bohemond becomes an aggre-gated member of the order by election ; 2 and a newPope confirms what his predecessors had said, parti-cularly respecting the Hospitalleresses in Spain—hisHoliness praising them as no doubt they deserved; 3
