Now in Europe or Asia Minor, now on the Orontesor Euphrates, almost at the same instant in a battlebeyond the Red Sea, defending Jerusalem, ormaking an inroad on Damascus or Aleppo. Theirscorn of ambushes or stratagems was likewise great;and prudence in their leaders was too often calledweakness or timidity, and many of their princespaid with their lives or liberty the vain glory ofdangers that were without any utility to the Chris-tian cause. Yet these uncalculating exploits pro-duced results that resembled prodigies, the onlypolicy that could have maintained the Europeansovereignty so long . 1 Another advantage derivedfrom thoughtlessness (though it had an air of thepolitical) was, that when any Mahometan populationhad to leave a town, they were replaced by Franks,who, marrying women from Syria or Apulia, pro-duced a race called Pulani , 2 like Mulattoes, despisedby some, yet faithful subjects to the Latindomination.
