The moment Baldwin was free, instead of re-turning to the delighted Jerusalem, he assembledan army towards Antioch, and marched againstAleppo. 2 But being repulsed, though joined bythe head of the Arabs, and even some emirs, hevisited the capital, and after gathering a companyof Hospitallers and other distinguished knights,he made an inroad on the Damascan countries, andwon such large booty, that it produced a sum thatsufficed to ransom the people he had left in cap-tivity in Mesopotamia, 3 his own daughter included.It is probably the only instance of a king’s havinghired out his daughter into slavery. Yet perhapsthe times, and not he, were to blame.
