the order continued the same fashion for a time,though constable ceased soon to be in vogue, andhis functions were given to another. MatthewParis says the order’s standard-bearer had itsproper name of Balnicafer, but perhaps that wasafterwards. 1 The keeper or castellan, is impliedin castles, and though several medals and seals be-longing to many such functionaries found of lateare all of Rhodes, still as Godfrey gave a castle, itfollows that he also gave it a keeper. Essilia wasthe castle’s name in 1100 ; 2 one month after thefirst foundation of the order, Essilia of St. Abra-ham, is called simply St. Abraham in Godfrey’sdonation, from its being close to it, perhaps anappendage of it; and many other castles in Pales-tine were given to the Hospitallers before 1100;and in each was a keeper, and over all therewas a lord keeper. The names of two of theseearliest keepers are come down to us in two docu-ments. 3 Of the turcopolier we have spoken al-ready at full length. There is a fixed traditionin the order, even amongst such as have not muchstudied its annals, that turcopolier is contemporarywith the founding of the order; but indeed, troopsof that name were used by the Turks, and even
