TRACT 34.
IN GUNNER*".

The Gun n° 1 . —Weight and every thing else as usual.—The annular leaden weights, which fit on about the trun-nions, have gradually been knocked much out of formby the shocks of the sudden recoils ; so that, not fittingclosely, they are subject to shake, a circumstance whichprobably has occasioned the irregularities in the recoils ofthis day.
The Pendflum continued hanging still. It is suspectedthat its vibrations are not to be strictly depended on withthe high charges of powder ; owing to the striking of theballs against the iron plate within the block, and so per-haps causing them to rebound within it, and disturb thevibrations, which are not regular this day. After it wastaken down, the pendulum was found to weigh 726 lb.But, from the weight of the balls and plugs lodged in it,it ought to have weighed 7S2 lb. It is therefore likely thatthe 6 lb had been lost, by evaporation of the moisture, inthe 4 days, which is lb per day. At the beginning ofeach day’s experiments therefore lj-lb is deducted from theweight of the pendulum, or '2 lb before each of the lastthree days. And the like was done on some former days, for the same reason, when it appeared necessary.
Of the plugs, 10 inches weighed 10 ounces.
