The Vertical and Horizontal Alitions are given to the Telefcope by Means of the Joints at **!c and d, Fig. I. This Method does very well when the Telefcope is ufed for Land Objefts; 0but if it be intended principally for afironomical Purpo{es, then it fhould have Raciwork orScrervs to move it.

The Horizontal Motion is improved by a Conical Tube, which is faftened 0to the Feet, and goes through the infide of the Brafs Pillar L, having a Point at the Top on 4which the Telefcope moves, bearing likewife on the Bale at H, where its Motion is fteady { * f)and pleafant, fo as not to require any Rackwork, unlefs for very accurate Afironomical Obfer- 4vations, for which Purpofe a Worm and endlefs Screw may be added to the Bafe at H, to bemoved by the Hook's Joint and Handle, Fig. 3. * §

DESCRIPTION ET USAGE

DES LUNETTES ACHROMATIQUES A PIEDS,

Perfeftionées et Faites par W. GILBERT & Co.

( CI-DEVANT GILBERT ET WRIGHT )

Qui fc vendent chez eux, No. 148, LEADENH ALL-STRpET, à Londres.

L A fig. 1. repréfentie la lunette fur fon pied : A A, le tuyau extérieur de cuivre ou de bois ;
