HINTS of OCCURRENCES

ON THE

RIVER RHINE, &c.

I N an excurfion from Aix la Chapelle, we vifited the remains of a caftle at the diftance of three miles. It iscalled the Caftle of Schonbert; and is the fubje6t of the twenty-ninth plate. But not being fituated on an emi-nence, not being a place of ftrength, and there being no traces of a town of which it might have been thedefence—I fhould have concluded it to have been a fortified monaftery, rather than a caftle. The fituation isfecluded and rural; it is fheltered by a beautiful wood, and a large farm is annexed to it. The whole fcene ispittorefque in its forms; and the lights and fhadows are happily difpofed.

In examining the fpring, whence the waters come to Aix la Chapelle, we had a view of a little town calledBorcet. The ftreets are wide; the buildings large and handfome, but they are painted of a very deep crimfon.It is fituated on an eminence, and commands a good view of Aix la Chapelle, at a diftance of two miles.

From Aix la Chapelle we proceeded to Liege. The ftreets of this city are very narrow, and the houfes high.The great number of churches and monafteries indicate the prevalence of ecclefiaftical power, if not an ecclefi-aftical government. The cathedral has all the grandeur which can well be given by fize: but having beenereCted in parcels at different times, and by various architects ; it wants that fymmetry and unity which add tothe effeCt of large objeCts. The feparate parts are worth notice; being finifhed with great care, and with fometafte. The walks by the river are broad, long, and beautiful; the trees are noble and difpofed with good effeCt.

The bifhop of Liege is lord of the territory in a civil and ecclefiaftical fenfe: but as a prieft he is fuffragan tothe archbifhop of Cologne.
