tivation of the vineyards of Baccharah would be too arduous for human patience or ftrength to endure. The fide ofthe mountain on which the vines are planted, is cut into a great number of (hallow terraces, which are carried quite toits fummit; forming an afcent, almod perpendicular, of at lead half a mile: by thefe terraces, the peafants afcend themountain, and convey manure, which they carry on their fhoulders to every part of the vineyard. When properlydiftributed, they fecure it, in the bed manner the nature of the ground will admit, by a (light fence; but they haveoften the mortification to fee their labours frudrated by violent rains, which fweep away both foil and manure, andleave the roots of the vines bare. This produces a failure of the vintage; which, from whatever caufe it happens, gene-rally reduces the proprietors of vineyards to the humble fituation of day-labourers, whofe poverty and wretchednefsare not to be conceived from any condition or circumdances to which the lowed of the people of England either areor can be expofed.

Having finifhed my drawing of Pfaltz, we returned to Baccharah greatly fatigued ; as much owing to the extremeheat we had endured in pading through the clofe alleys of the vineyards, as to the length of our walk.

The fituation of Baccharah is very fimilar to that of many other places in our tour; it dands at the foot of alofty mountain, on the fummit of which, are the remains of a large cadle, which formerly communicated with thetown by a line of fmall towers, fome of which are dill perfect: a handfome church with a very high deeple, rifing abovethe other buildings in the middle of the town, makes a fair appearance, and is of confiderable confequence to the generalbeauty of the view. But notwithdanding the grandeur and boldnefs of the front obje£ts and the pibfurefque beauty ofthofe which compofed the other points of this view, I was unable to make a drawing of it to my fatisfadfion. Therewas fomething in the lines of didance, added to the effedl of a black paint or wafh, with which the fronts of the houfesare coloured, that did not admit of a pleafing reprefentation: on this account, I thought it too imperfedl to make apart of the prefent colledtion.

The religious communities of Baccharah confid of Lutherans, Calvinids and Roman-Catholics, the latter, however,though greatly out-numbered by the former, contrive to podefs themfelves of all places of profit or power, or to admitfuch only of the protedants, as are too infignificant in point of confequence or abilities, to give any effedlual oppofitionto their meafures : and this tyranny, which prevails generally through the whole principality of the palatinate, is differedin many places to induence even the appointment of protedant miniders to ecclefiadical benefices. It is difficult toaccount for this extreme paffivenefs, otherwife than by imputing it to a depreffion of fpirit that may dill accompanytheir recollection of the unexampled cruelties, which in the rage of catholic zeal were exercifed on their unfortunateancedors at the end of the lad century. Nor is it at all improbable that this is the real caufe of their forbearance un-
