JL H E Tour which is the fubjeft of the following fheets, was not undertaken with the flighteft view to apublication; but merely in purfuit of health: which I had in vain fought in the various temperatures of Englifhair, and by every other means that flattered me with the hope of relief. My diforder was that to which Englifhconflitutions are peculiarly fubjeft; and for which Phyficians are as much at a lofs for a name as a remedy. Havingno refpite from fuffering ; and being reduced to a ftate of nervous debility that was become infupportable, and whichfor many years had defied the moli fkilful application of medicine, I determined to try a change of climate : and Iconfidered it as no unfavorable omen, that in the choice of my route, my mind was irrefiftibly attra&ed to thofe fceneswhich afforded ample fubje&s for the indulgence of my favorite fludy. To furvey the romantic beauties of Switzer-land, and to vifit the enchanting fhores of the Rhine, had long been obje&s of my earnefl defire. I had therefore nodifficulty in determining what courfe I fhould take; and my diforder feemed to abate in the contemplation of acquifitions, which my imagination had already depofited in my port-folio.
