ALONG THE PENINSULA OF KERTSH, kc. 247

whofe moral chara&er deferves no commendation. The wholeregion is completely divefted of wood; but, on approaching themountains, at the diftance of nearly eight verfts from the road, weagain met with trees, and fhortly after with forefts. Both arableand raeadow lands are here throughout of an excellent quality, and yield good crops; but the frequent droughts, occurringin Taurida during the vernal feafon, too often difappoint theexpe&ations of the hufbandman.

Beyond the rivulet Suya, we travelled over an eminencethat condu&ed us to the fmall brook Manta; and, about fixverfts from the former, we crofled a more confiderable ftream, named Burultfha: like that of the Suya, it iflues from a highpart of the mountains; flows towards the low country wateredby the Salgir; and almoft difappears beneath the foil, previouflyto its confluence with that river. None of the Crimean ftreamsprefents fuch variations in the volume of water as the Burult-fha. Its bed, being covered with pebbles and gravel, is atleaft fixty fathoms broad; though, in general, a very fmallcurrent only paffes over this extenfive Channel. Neverthelefä,after violent fhowers, or when large quantities of fnow dif-folve on the heights, the whole bed is fometimes filled to theheight of an arfhine, and the brook exhibits a rapid torrent.

After crofling the rivulet Suya, the country becomes re-markably level; and an extenfive piain opens in front of thelofty Alps of Temirdfhi and Karabee, rifing progreffively, without forming confiderable hüls; fo that the whole chainof the eaftern mountains, together with the Tfhatyrdag, maybe diftinctly furveyed. This flat region, which alfo expandsin a fouthern direction, has fcarcely any layer of ftone on its

furface,
