After having croffed thefe fhattered mountains, we agaiamet with a horizontal bed of brown fchiftus, mixed with clay. Its winding ftrata are in a manner fpeckled like fome roots oftrees; taking an undulated dire&ion, and extending into thevalley of Alufhta. The whole road, from mount Ayoudaghnear Parthenit to Alufhta, being a diftance of twelve verfts, prefents beautiful plants and fhrubs. Among the latter, wemet with the Coronilla Etnerus in abundance.

The extenüve dale of Alufhta feparates the weftern partof the Crimean mountains, hitherto defcribed, from thofe inthe eaftern quarter. Its breadth is about fix verfts; but itsdepth does not exceed five, when computed from the bafe oflofty Tfhatyrdag to the fea-coaft. This mount, being ifolatedby two vallies that fpread as far as the northern piain, confinesone of the latter, and is in a manner difplaced toward theNorth; where it appears to be excluded from the feries ofremarkable mountains. On the weftern fide, a cape of nearlyfimilar elevation projeös from the eminences in that region;there forming the Babugan Yaila, and ftretching forth its pro-montories to the fhore : on the eaftern fide the heights of Te-mirdfhi, though fomewhat lower, ftand oppoied to the Tfhatyr-dag, and their declivities likewife reach as far as the fea; becaufethe whole coaft, from Lambat, takes a north-eafterly direction.Between the more fouthern Babugan Yaila, and the fteep Tfha-tyrdag, both of which are apparently detached from the othermountains, a broad and deep woody dale extends North-weft tothe fources of the river Alma, which are principally colle&edfrom the eaftern part of the Alpine Babugan, where only aflat ridge, in a line with the Tfhatyrdag, feparates the current
