THE DANCE OF MACABER.

In the year 1549,, on the tenth of April, thewhole of this cloister, together with the Danceof Death, the tombs, and monuments, was begunto be pnlled down by command of the Duke ofSomerset, so that nothing thereof was left but thebare plot of ground, which was afterwards con-verted into a garden for the petty Canons *.

All the ancient Dances of Death, though evi-dently to be deduced from one original, differedvery materially in the number and design of thecharacters. They uniformly appear to have beenaccompanied with Macaber's verses, or more pro-bably with imitations of them.
