THE DANCE OF DEATH.
PLATE XVI.—THE CANONESS.
Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not into the way of evilmen. Pkov. iv. 14.
There appears in this young and beautifulrecluse, a striking mixture of gallantry and de-votion. On her knees before a little altar, withher rosary in her hand, she is amorously listeningto the songs which a young man, seated on a bed, addresses to her, accompanying them with hislute. Death comes to put out the tapers burningon the altar, and to change into sadness the plea-sures of this conversation.
