PLATE IX.—THE CARDINAL.

Which justify die wicked for reward, and take away the righteousnessof the righteous from him. Isaiah, v. 23.

A messenger has just presented to him,, onhis knees,, the bull that constitutes him a cardinal.Death seizes this moment to make his appearance,and seems to want to turn his hat upon his head.The messenger is holding in his right hand a tinbox, hung by a strap, in which he had, no doubt,carried the bull, which the new-made cardinalholds in his right hand with the seals appended toit.

Un message* vient de lui remettre, en faisantune genuflexion, la bulle qui le fait cardinal. LaMort saisit ce moment pour paroitre, et semblevouloir lui faire tourner son chapeau sur la tete.Le messager tient de la main droite une boite defer-blanc, pendue a une courroie, et dans laquelleil avoitsans doufce apporte la bulle, que le cardi-nal nouvellement cree tient a la main droite avecles sceaux y affixes.
