In England Holbein drew a vast numberof admirable portraits ; among others, thoseof Henry VII. and Henry VIII. on the wallof the pakce at Whitehall, which perishedwhen it was burnt, though some endeavourswere made to remove that part of the wallon which the pictures were drawn. Therehappened, however, an affair in England,which might have been fatal to Holbein, ifthe king had not protected him. On the re-port of his character, a nobleman of the firstquality wanted one day to see him, when hewas drawing a figure after the life. Holbein,
