There is some difficulty in ascertaining the real meaning ofthe designer of this subject. It has been described as theCardinal receiving the bull of his appointment, or as a richman making a purchase of indulgences. The latter interpre-tation seems warranted by the Latin motto. Death is twistingoff the Cardinal's hat.
