wo excellent artists, Rudolph and Conrad Meyer orMeyern, natives of Zurich. The designs are chiefly byRudolph, and the etchings by Conrad, consisting of sixtyvery masterly compositions. The grouping of the figuresis admirable, and the versatile representations of Deathmost skilfully characterised. Many of the subjects aregreatly indebted to the Lyons wood engravings.

In 1657 an d 1759 there appeared other editions ofthe latter, with this title, "Die menschliche Sterblichkeitunder dem titel Todten Tanz in lxi original-kupfern, vonRudolf und Conrad Meyern beruhmten kunstmahlernin Zurich abermal herausgegeben, nebst neuen, dazudienenden, moralischen versen und ueberschriften." Thatis, " Human mortality, under the title of the Dance ofDeath, in 61 original copper prints of Rudolph andConrad Meyer, renowned painters at Zurich, to whichare added appropriate moral verses and inscriptions."Hamburg and Leipsig, 1759, 4to. The prolegomena areentirely different from those in the other edition, andan elaborate preface is added, giving an account of severaleditions of the Dance of Death. Instead of the Captain,No. 25, the Ensign is substituted, and the Cook is newlydesigned. Some of the numbers of the subjects are mis-placed. The etchings have been retouched, and on manythe date of 1637 is seen, which had nowhere occurred inthe first edition here described.

In 1704 copies of 52 of these etchings were publishedat Augsburg, under the title of "Tripudium mortis pervictoriam super carnem universal orbis terrae erectum.Ab A. C. Redelio S. C. M. L. P." on a label held byDeath as before. Then the German title :—" ErbaulicherSterb-Spiegel, das ist sonnen-klahre vorstellung mensch-licher nichtigkeit durch alle stande und geschlechter ;vermittelst schoner kuprTern, lehr-reicher bey-schrifftenund hertz-beweglich angehangter Todten-lieder ehmahlsherausgegeben durcfe Rudolph und Conrad Meyernnahlern in Zurich; anjetzo aber mit Lateinischen unter-:hrifften der kupffer vermehret und aussgezieret von dem/elt-beruhmten Poeten Augustino Casimiro Redelio, Belg.vlech Sac.
