E find the Dance of Death often re-presented, not only on the walls, butin the windows of churches, in thecloisters of monasteries, and even onbridges, especially in Germany andSwitzerland. It was sometimes paintedon church screens, and occasionallysculptured on them, as well as uponthe fronts of domestic dwellings. It occurs in many ofthe manuscript and illuminated service books of the MiddleAges, and frequent allusions to it are found in other manu-scripts, but very rarely in a perfect state, as to the numberof subjects.

Most of these representations were accompanied bydescriptive or moral verses in different languages. Thosewhich were added to the paintings of this subject inGermany appear to have differed very materially, and itis not now possible to ascertain which among them isthe oldest. Those in the Basle painting are inserted inthe editions published and engraved by Mathew Merian,but they had already occurred in the Decennalia humaneperegrinationis of Gaspar Landismann in 1584.
