JPLATE XXXVII. THE MISER.

X he character of the Miser is very forcibly expressed in thissketch. Shut up in a vault, which receives thc light only througha wicket, secured with a double grate of thick iron bars, he isentirely taken up with his beloved treasure, a considerable partwhereof Death is snatching up before his eyes. This loss excitegin him all the Symptoms of the most violent desperation, and itplainly appears that his gold is an hundred times dearer to hisbeart than his life.

Stulte, hac nocte repetunt animam tuam: & quaß parästi, cujusYunt? Lucae xii. 20.

PLANCHE XXXVII. UAYARE.
