PLATE XII.— THE ABBESS.

JDeath ludicrously hooded with several flowing plumes, androbed in a kind of gown, carries out of her convent an Abbess,whom he is dragging with all his might by her scapulary. Thereverend Mother with regret is leaving life and the honours sheenjoys ; and expresses, by the alteration of her featurcs and byher cries, the fright that Death has produced in her soul. ße-hind her, under the gate of tne convent, appears ayoung Nun,strangely agitated with terror and grief.

JLdA Mort ridiculement coiffee de diverses plumes Hottantes,& vetue d'une espece de mante, emmene hors de son couventune Abbesse qu'elle tire de toutes ses forces par son scapulaire.La reverendissime Mere quitte ä regret la vie & lcs honneursdont eile jouit, & exprime par Falteration de ses traits & parses cris, Teffroi que la Mort a jete dans son ame. On voit der-ricre eile, sous la porte de l'abbaye, une jeune Nonne viveiuente par la crainte & par la douleur.
