to the Remainder, printed by him as the Statutesapproved by this King ; for even that very Articleabridged by him, which inftead of a George di-refled a jewel, having on one Side a Knight car-rying a Book upon a Swords Point, on the Swordto be written Protesi io, on the Book Verbum Dei, onthe Reverfe a Shield, on which ihould be writtenFides, was upon maturer Confederation omitted. In this King’s journal p. So Apr. 24, it is inferted“ That the Order of the Garter was wholly alteredt£ as appeareth by the new Statutes. There weredefied Sir Andrew Dudley and the Earl of Wcft-<c merland.” But though the Year is not markedthis mull be in 1552 the fixth Year, ’when thefeKnights were chofen, and in Truth the Colleflorhath a very fair Exemplar of Statutes illuminatedon Parchment, dated at firft on this 24 Apr.through which Words a Stroke is drawn with aPen, and inftead thereof in the Margin the follow-ing ones, Windeforiæ 28 Sept, are entred with thisKings own Hand, with lèverai other Alterationsmade in the like Manner, and this Exemplar varies ;from the former Draught made in 1551, not only jin a more correfl Style, as to the Latinity, but |in feveral Particulars of the fubjeft Matter ; andthough it is probable thefe two Knights mightbe inftalled according to the Direftions of thisDraught, yet there is in his Majefty’s Paper Officethe Draught of a larger Defign thus fubfcribedRudimenta funt h.ec Ordinis , qua potius colligunturquam componuntur. Gul. Caecilius Ord. Gart. Can-cellarius 19 Dec. 1552, 6 Ed. 6. And in Truth theStatutes were not peifefted, till the 17 of Marchin the 7th Year, when they received their Autho-rity under the Seal of the Order, which are in-
ferted in the App. n. xiv by Way of Hiftory only, for thofe Statutes were on 27 Sept, following underthe Reign of Queen Mary, not only abrogated, butordered to be expunged out of this Regifter, whichwas accordingly executed, and this Book is veryimperfefl in feveral other Tranfa fiions of this.Reign, owing to another Decree made on $ Aug.
1 & 2 Ph. G? M. C5 that all afte recorded in it repug-
nant and difagreeable either with the antiene“ and received Statutes of this Order, or elfe with“ the Laws of the realme fhould be taken out.’*And it plainly appears by Inflection, that thisRegifter was new bound , s when it is pro-bable other Inftruments befides thefe new Sta-tutes were taken out, befides fome Paragraphswhich are obliterated in that Manner, as thatthey are totally illegible.
