Nam fanda eft (inquit) &felubris Cogitatio pro Defundis exorare ut a peccatis folvantur. Sciebatenim quod hii qui cum pietate dormitionem accipiunt optimam habeantrepofitam Gratiam. give the&oty, and fumiß the Comquerors with a Subjeci for Joy and Tri -umph : That he would grant Salivation, and a much better Triumph inanother Place to the conquered, or thofe who fall in the Battle. > ThusJudas Macchabeus, that mofi excellent and fuccefsful Soldier of God,when he had taken up the Bodies of them who were fain, to bury them intheir Fathers Graves, fent alfo with them to Jerufelem twelve ThoufandDrachma's to be offered there, for thofe who had fallen in Battle, that a Sa -crifice might be offered for the Sins of the Dead, doing therein very well andhone fly, in that he was mindful of the Refurre&ion. For it is (fays he) aholy and good Thought to pray for the Dead, that they may he delivered fromSin j and he alfo perceived, that there was great Favour laid up for thofethat died godly. This then is that Thought which rejoices Kings, animates Ge-nerals, gives Vigor to Knights, Eafe 'to Soldiers, and abundantly frengthensevery Man : When they are very welt affnred, that great Favour is laid upfor them, if they die godly. This it is that makes us run to Prayers -, hythis we are all drawn, every one of us according to the bef of our Ability. Tothis is owing the founding of Monaferies, Halls, and Colleges : To the End,that among godly, kind, and well affe&ed, and rightly difpofed Chrifians, Pray-ers ßould be continually, and in every Place put up and joined, as well for theLiving, as the Dead. For the Living , that they might behave themfelves in Peace,as well as in War with Godlinefs, Sobriety, Wifdom, Safety, and Happinefs, andperform every Thing to their Hearts juf Defre. For the Dead that they having

obtained Remiffton of their Sins, ?night ref in Peace, and enjoying the Bright -nefs of the Kingdom of Heaven , might reign together for ever . I exhort there-
