MISCELLANEOUS REMARKS.
[ARMORIAL BEARINGS.
As the Supporters of Knights of the Garter (the Thistle and Saint Patrick ), 1of Knights Grand Cross of the Bath, and of Knights Grand Cross of SaintMichael and Saint George (if not Peers), are derived from, and belong to thoseDignities, they cannot properly be used, unless the Shields with which theyoccur, be encircled with the Ensigns of the Order.
A custom exists on the Continent of placing the Arms of Knights GrandCross of some Orders upon the Cross, or upon the Star, of the Order; and theArms of the Knights of the Garter, as painted on glass in Saint George’s Chapel, are represented with the Shield upon the Star, but there is no authority whateverfor the Knights to bear their Arms in that manner.
