WIVES OF GENTLEMEN.

The Widows of all Peers, Baronets, Knights of the Orders, KnightsBachelors, Companions of the Bath, and of Cavalieri and Companions ofSaint Michael and Saint George, are entitled to the Style and Precedencywhich they enjoyed during the lifetime of their husbands, so long as they con-tinue unmarried; but on marrying again, they lose all right to their formerRank and Title, and have no other name or place than what their second hus-bands may confer upon them; it being a rule of Law, settled as early as theyear 1436, that what a woman gains by marriage she loses by marriage, for“ eodem modo quo quid constituitur, dissolvitur.” 1

The Daughters of all Persons of Dignity are entitled to the Rank of theWives of their eldest brothers, whom they immediately follow.
