[GENERAL REMARKS.
‘The number of Admirals or Captains of the Navy on whom a Medal hasbeen conferred are 120; and there are seven who would have received it hadthey not been killed in the Battle commemorated by a Medal. The greatestnumber of Medals given to any Naval Officer was three, of which there areonly two instances, namely, the late Admiral Lord Collingwood, who was inthe Battles of Ushant, St. Vincent, and Trafalgar, .and the late Rear-AdmiralSir Edward Berry, who was present at the Nile, Trafalgar, and St. Domingo.Lord Nelson wore two Medals, one for the Battle of St. Vincent, and the otherfor the Nile; and he would, of course, have received a third for Trafalgar.Seven Officers, namely, the late Admirals, Sir John Thomas Duckworth, SirThomas Foley, Lord de Saumarez, Sir Thomas Louis, Sir Thomas Troubridge,and William Parker, and the late Captain Ralph Willett Miller, were honouredwith two Medals; and for one Captain (Wooldridge), a special Medal wasstruck, he having conducted fire ships against the Enemy’s squadron in AixRoads. No more than twenty of the Officers to whom the Naval Medal wasgiven are now living.
The number of Officers of the Army on whom Medals have been conferred,including several of the Portuguese, and a few of the Spanish Army, is verynearly 850, many of whom received additional marks of Honour in the formof Clasps and Crosses, indicating that they had distinguished themselves inother Battles. The Duke of Wellington having been Commander-in-Chief inThirteen Battles (besides Assaye and Waterloo), wears a Cross and nine Clasps,which is the greatest number ever given. Two Officers, General ViscountBeresford, and the late Lieutenant-General Sir Denis Pack, received a Crossand seven Clasps, for eleven Battles; three Officers, Lieutenant-Generals SirGeorge Murray and Sir Colin Campbell, and the late Major-General SirAlexander Dickson, received a Cross and six Clasps, for ten Battles; sevenOfficers have received a Cross and five Clasps, for nine Battles; and eight, aCross and four Clasps, for eight Battles; seventeen Officers received a Crossand three Clasps, for seven Battles; eighteen, a Cross and two Clasps, for sixBattles; forty-six, a Cross and one Clasp, for five Battles; and sixty-one, aCross, for four Battles. Seventy-two Officers received a Medal and twoClasps, for three Battles; one hundred and forty-three Officers, a Medal andone Clasp, for two Battles; and four hundred and sixty-nine Officers, a Medalfor one Battle.
