The memory of those gallant officers is, however, perpetuated byPublic Monuments in St. Paul’s Cathedral.

The victory over the Spanish Fleet off Cape St. Vincent, by Admiral SirJohn Jervis, K. B. on the 14th of February 1797, was the second occasion onwhich the Naval Medal was bestowed; and as no principle of selection wasthen acted upon, it is only necessary to state the names of the Officers whoreceived the distinction. To the Commander in Chief, who was raised to thedignity of an Earl, and to Vice-Admiral Charles Thompson, Vice-Admiral theHonourable William Waldegrave, Rear-Admiral William Parker, CommodoreHoratio Nelson, and Captain Robert Calder, the Captain of the Fleet, theLarge Medal was given, which was to be worn from the neck to a white andblue Ribband; and the fifteen following Captains were honoured with the smallMedal; namely, Captain Cuthbert Collingwood, of the Excellent; JamesRichard Dacres, of the Barfleur; Thomas Lenox Frederick, of the Blenheim;Thomas Foley, of the Britannia; the Honourable George Grey, of the Victory;John Irwin, of the Prince George; Sir Charles Henry Knowles, Bart, of theGoliah; George Martin, of the Irresistible; Ralph Willett Miller, of the Cap-tain ; George Murray, of the Colossus; James Saumarez, of the Orion; JohnSutton, of the Egmont; George Henry Towry, of the Diadem; ThomasTroubridge, of the Culloden; and James Hawkins Whitshed, of the Namur. Each Medal bore, on the reverse, the name of the battle, and of the officerto whom it was given, together with that of the ship he commanded, hisrank, and the date of the event; thus, george martin esquire captain ofH.
