SAINT MICHAEL AND SAINT GEORGE, [general remarks.

From the Institution of the Order in 1818, to the present time (5th November1841), there have been 2 Grand Masters, 49 Knights Grand Cross, 37 KnightsCommanders, and 46 Cavalieri or Companions, forming in all 109 Members.

Of the 49 Knights Grand Cross, 33 have been natives of Great Britain; ofwhom one is a Prince of the Blood Royal, and Grand Master; 4 were LordsHigh Commissioners in the Ionian States; 3 were Governors or Lieutenant-Governors of Malta; 10 were Naval Commanders-in-Chief in the Medi-terranean; and 10 were appointed in 1837 or 1838, for their services at theblockade of Valletta, in the years 1798, 1799, and 1800, or at the capture ofsome of the Ionian Islands in 1809 and 1810; 2 12 have been Ionians, and 4were Maltese. The present number (5th November 1841) of Knights GrandCross is 27; of whom 20 are natives of Great Britain, 6 are Ionians, and1 is a Maltese.

Of the 37 Knights Commanders, 12 have been natives of Great Britain,17 were Ionians, and 8 Maltese. The present number is 19 (there being onevacancy) of whom 8 are natives of Great Britain, 7 are Ionians, and 4 areMaltese.

Of the 46 members of the Third Class, there have been 10 Companions;and 36 Cavalieri, of whom 22 were Ionians, and 14 were Maltese. There arenow 7 Companions, and 18 Cavalieri; of whom, all the Companions arenatives of Great Britain; and of the Cavalieri, 10 are Ionians, and 8 areMaltese.
